What is Safe Zone - Tallahassee, Florida?
Safe Zone is a program designed to identify people in Tallahassee, FL who consider themselves to be open to and knowledgeable about lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) issues. Members display a Safe Zone symbol to demonstrate their acceptance of LGBT individuals.

Why do we have Safe Zone?
Florida State University (FSU) and the surrounding community are proud of their culturally diverse population and support cultural diversity in every way possible. Safe Zone is a subtle way to say that all sexual orientations and gender presentations are part of our culture and are acknowledged and supported.

What does it mean if I see a Safe Zone symbol displayed?
A Safe Zone symbol, a pink triangle in a green circle, identifies the person as someone who has chosen to educate her/himself about lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender issues and has information about local resources.

Who can be a member of Safe Zone?
Anyone who is interested and willing to be an ally can join Safe Zone.

Do I already need to know about LGBT resources to join?
Members of Safe Zone need only to be open and supportive to the needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals and willing to learn about issues related to sexual orientation and gender presentation.

Do I have to be gay to join Safe Zone?
Displaying the Safe Zone symbol does NOT mean that you are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender or that you will participate in any LGBT activities.

What do Safe Zone members do?
Safe Zone members agree to be aware of the presence of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals. Members also believe that campuses and communities are enriched by the diversity of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals and are willing to assist individuals in accessing support and information resources on campus and in the community. Safe Zone members also agree to maintain confidentiality at work and comfortably use inclusive language, avoid stereotyping, and do not assume heterosexuality. Lastly, and most importantly, Safe Zone members may make a difference in someone's life and possibly never know about it.

How do I join Safe Zone?
Call the FSU University Counseling Center at (850) 644-2003 and request to join the program. Membership is free. You will be asked for your name and mailing address. A Safe Zone packet including a Resource Guide and Safe Zone symbols will be mailed to you. You can also click here to join online.

How is Safe Zone funded?
Safe Zone - Tallahassee, Florida is a not for profit, grass-roots organization that is funded by the FSU University Counseling Center, grants, and private donations. Funds are used to get the word out about the program through such things as advertising, resource materials, and Safe Zone symbols for members to display.
